Abstract

Thespesia populnea is a small tree in the Malvaceae family, commonly found in the tropical regions and coastal forests of India. The various parts of this plant like roots, bark, leaves, flowers and fruits are known to possess different pharmacological properties. The presence of a wide range of chemical compounds such as alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, saponins, tannins, terpenoids etc. are responsible for its various pharmacological properties. The objective of the present review is to provide a focus on the traditional uses, phyotochemical and pharmacological aspects of Thespesia populnea for easy access of researchers intending to work on the wide range of active chemical constituents in this plant.
