Essentials of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance for Health Care Workers

The improving in technology has brought dynamic changes globally with new hazards that results tinto disasters. Disasters form a core reflection in communities that tests the resilience and capacity to cope of nations. With the current global recession due to covid-pandemic and the current war between Ukraine and Russia, disaster havoc is bound to increase. Human suffering coupled with disaster complex (disaster on top of another disaster) will continue causing human suffering.

This book is meant to equip health workers on knowledge that aims at detection of early warning signs of disasters, prevention and mitigation of disasters. The book is a culmination of the others many years of teaching undergraduate medical students at Egerton University. The other has proposed on disaster cycle model approach to address hazards before the disaster emergency occurs. It is more economical to be proactive in addressing hazards before the disaster strikes.

The book is divided into chapters. The broad categorization is based on the three main types of disaster natural disasters, human caused disaster and technological disasters. Each type of disaster is analyzed. The phases of disaster are classified into eight phases of each disaster.

The current ongoing climate change should be declared a global disaster. Many nations are faced with famine because of climate variability. New and emergency of diseases is increasing the already overburdened health systems especially in developing countries. The author hopes that various health workers will find this book useful.
