Abstract

Industrialization of African agriculture is proponed to increase productivity, create employment,
inclusiveness, and add value to Agri-products in domestic and international markets, hence enhancing
African economies’ competitiveness. This chapter had analyzed Nine (9) agricultural parameters for
the period 1992-2012 for selected African countries that data was available. Tunisia and Egypt
registered above-median compared to other nations regarding Agricultural tractor imports, Agriculture
machinery- tractors per 100 sq. Km., Agriculture value added per worker, Manufactured value added
per annum, and Manufactured value added per unit of GDP. While Morocco registered above-median
for Agriculture value added per annum; Agriculture value added per worker, and Manufactured valueadded
per Annum. Furthermore, Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco had non-agrarian economies indicative
of more diverse economies than other African countries. These three countries had the best in class
industries that had shown substantial value-added. The Textile industry in Egypt, the Agro-processing
industry in Tunisia, and the Fishery products industry in Morocco were specific case studies analyzed
to highlight the specific components of a strong value chain. The attributes from these value chains
are considered by the author as best practices in Africa. The author calls for policymakers,
development partners, researchers, and other interested parties to view this study insights in line with
achieving objectives of SDG 2 – Double by 2030, agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale
producers through value addition.
