Abstract

Parapenaeus is a well defined genus with all the known species having an unique diagnostic characters. The genus Parapenaeus was created by Smith (1885) Penaeus longirostris Lucas, 1846 as its type from water of Cape Matifou Algeria. Alcock (1901) first recorded the genus from east coast of India. Global record of species of the genus is 17, out of which Indian water represents only five species. During the present investigation only 3 species viz., P. fissurus (Bate, 1881); P. investigatoris Alcock & Anderson, 1899; P. longipes Alcock, 1905, could be examined. Remaining two P. sextuberculatus Kubo, 1949 and P. fissuroides indicus Crosnier, 1985 is being reported here on the basis of existing literatures. Present work is a comprehensive study of the group from Indian water.
