Abstract

The study investigated human resources development performance appraisal in Nigerian Universities. Adopting a descriptive research design, the target population was made up of both teaching and non-teaching staff of Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt totaling 4,200 (four thousand two hundred). This study adopted the Taro Yamane technique to arrive at a sample size of 382. A self-structured questionnaire tagged, Performance Appraisal as a Tool for Human Resources Management (PATHRD) with a modified 4-point Likert scale ranging from1-4 Very High Extent = (VHE), High Extent = (HE), Low Extent = (LE), Very Low Extent = (VLE) was used to collect data. 382 copies of the questionnaire were administered to respondents in the stated institutions out of which 350 representing 96% were duly completed and returned which was used for the analyses. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation at the 2.5 mean criterion while the hypotheses were tested using regression statistical tool at .05 significance level. The study found that the consciousness of a time for appraisal was major bait for staff to be committed to duty and concluded that a reward system, as tailored from information obtained from staff performance appraisal be used to reward the staff according to performance. The study among others recommended that feedback obtained from appraisal exercises be applied without bias. Those who require training or development should be applied irrespective of the relationship within the system.
